Ring in the New Year safely by checking out with these driving tips.

New Year’s is a time for celebrating, reflection, and resolutions. As one of the most hyped party nights of the year, there will be lots of festivities occurring this December 31st. Whether you’re throwing a party, checking out a nightclub, or staying in, there are some important driving safety tips you should note. Drunk driving and New Year’s Eve unfortunately go hand-in-hand, according to the statistics. Take measures to protect your New Year’s Eve journey.

Avoid peak post-party times. Many New Year’s Eve parties run until at least midnight, so it’s better to drive between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m., and then wait again until 1 a.m. and 2 a.m. Driving between midnight and 1 a.m. is peak time when people are leaving the bar or party and heading home.

Check the weather report. You should be prepared for the weather conditions on the road so that you know what supplies to bring for your car.

Choose a designated driver. If you’re going to be traveling by car and don’t want to rely on taxis all night, choose a designated driver who will stay sober and drive everyone in your group. Not only will your journey be safer, a sober driver will be able to respond quickly to drunk drivers sharing the road.

Give up your keys when arriving at the party if you drove there and feel tempted to drink. Listen to your friends if they think you are too intoxicated to drive. There are always better options than getting behind the wheel tipsy.

Take public transportation. Public transportation is reliable, safe, and sure to be full of festive travelers! Plan your journey well in advance so that you know which bus to take.

Call a cab. This option is often easier said than done on New Year’s Eve, with many people having booked taxis well in advance. If you don’t want to use taxis, call a Lyft or an Uber. These apps make it extremely easy and hassle-free to get a pickup.

Book a room. Why not make a night of it? If you’re traveling to a party, book a room at a nearby hotel so that you can get there early, enjoy the day, and not have to worry about driving back home that night.
