What a Ticket Does to Your Auto Insurance

Auto Insurance in Camarillo, CATraffic tickets can seriously affect your auto insurance.

When car insurance companies determine your premiums, one of the biggest factors they look at is your history of traffic tickets. Statistically, when you have a driving record that shows moving violations and speeding tickets, your insurance company views you as a risky driver. For this reason, they raise the cost of your auto insurance.

How will a ticket affect my insurance in the short term?
The good news is that if you’re over twenty-five and this is your only ticket on your record (within the last three years), chances are it will make little difference to the rate you pay for auto insurance. However, it will vary from company to company. Most insurance companies don’t look at your driving record every month, but they do when your contract is initially purchased or renewed. If you notice your renewal cost is higher than your usual rate, you can thank your speeding ticket.

The effect of multiple tickets.
While getting a single speeding or traffic ticket may not drastically increase your insurance costs, getting several in a short timeframe can create significant problems and rapidly drain your wallet. Each additional ticket after the initial one will cause a much larger increase in your auto insurance rates.

The severity counts.
While the adjustments to premiums for moving violations vary among insurance companies and the driver’s records, you can expect to see a bigger rate increase for more serious infractions.

For example:

  • Driving with a broken headlight is a low-impact ticket.
  • A citation for speeding 15 miles per hour over the speed limit can have moderate effects on your car insurance rates.
  • A DUI conviction can have severe consequences when it comes to your rates.

Similarly, if you’re ticketed for speeding, your speed matters! Motorists who are driving 15 mph over the speed limit will see tougher fines and a higher auto insurance rate than those who are caught going 5 mph over the limit. Excessive speeding is linked to higher auto accident rates, which makes you a riskier driver to the insurance company. Keep an eye on that speedometer!

Celebrate 4th of July with This Healthy Burger Recipe!

4th of July RecipeThese tasty veggie burgers aim to please at every celebration.

The 4th of July is rolling around soon, and we all know that means barbeques are about to be stoked up and beer is cooling in the fridge. If you’re hosting a neighborhood party, colleague gathering, or even just enjoying the day with your family, be sure to add these healthy burgers to the menu.

These black and white bean burgers are not only easy to make, but they’re healthy, hearty, and positively delicious! Check out the recipe below:

Ingredients:

  • 1 can black beans
  • 1 can chickpeas
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 1 cup cooked brown rice
  • 3 tablespoons flour
  • Juice of 1 lemon
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon chile powder
  • ½ – ¾ cup cornmeal
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • Salt and pepper (optional seasoning)

Preparation:

  1. Rinse and drain the black beans and chickpeas. Place half of each along with the chopped onion in a food processor and pulse until coarsely ground. Set aside.
  2. Place the rest of the beans in a medium-size bowl and using a potato masher (or a fork) mash the beans. Next, add the bean/onion mixture to the bowl, along with the brown rice, flour, lemon juice, chile powder, and salt. Stir until well-combined. Add 1/2 cup of the cornmeal and stir again. Let the ingredients sit for a bit to allow the cornmeal to absorb any moisture. If the mixture still seems too wet, add more cornmeal until you achieve the desired consistency.
  3. Shape the bean dough into patties. Depending on their size, you should be able to create 6 to 8 patties.
  4. Heat an oven (convection or regular) to 250 degrees. While the oven is warming, get out a medium-sized skillet, add the oil, and place it on a burner set to medium-high heat. Once the oil is warm, add the patties. Let the patties cook about 5 minutes until brown on the bottom and then flip. Cook the other side another 5 minutes. Place the patties in an oven-safe pan and bake in the warmed oven for about 10 – 15 minutes.

Pair the burger with a soft bun, tomato, and a bit of lettuce – you can’t go wrong with this pairing!

From the insurance professionals at Chambers & Company Insurance Brokers, we hope that you enjoy these veggie burgers on your 4th of July! Be sure to visit us for all of your insurance needs.

Safety Tips for the Summer Sun

Safety Tips for the Summer Sun

Lather up on these tips to keep summer sunburn at bay!

Summer is the perfect opportunity to hit the beach, go on a hike, and enjoy the sunshine with friends and family. Before you lie out poolside, you’ll want to make sure that your skin is primed and ready for sunlight exposure – especially from the Californian sun! To help, we’ve put together a few safety tips for the summer.

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States – but you can take steps to minimize your risk. Take a few minutes to review these tips before heading out into the summer sun, then go out and have fun!

Summer sun safety:

  • Stay in the shade when possible, especially during the midday hours when the sun is at its strongest.
  • Wear hats with wide brims to shield your face, ears, and neck.
  • Wear sunglasses with protection from both UVA and UVB rays.
  • Drink plenty of water to compensate from sweating in the heat.
  • Select clothes made with a tight weave as they protect better than clothes with a loose weave.
  • Wear sunscreen (SPF 15 or higher).
  • If you do burn, stay in the shade or indoors and generously apply aloe vera gel!

Sunscreen:

  • Apply sunscreen 20 minutes before going outside.
  • Apply liberally and smooth it into your skin for maximum protection.
  • Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher. Children and babies should use a higher SPF.
  • Sunscreen loses its effectiveness over time, so discard bottles after 1-2 years.
  • Reapply every two hours, or after getting wet or sweating heavily.

Buying Business Insurance? Read These Tips First

Tips for Buying Business Insurance in Camarillo, CA

Every business needs insurance, but not all need the same policy. Here are some tips for finding the right business insurance.

No two businesses are alike. Similarly, no two businesses share the same risks and threats that can impact the business’s future, finances, and staff. From fire to fraud to dishonest employees, your business insurance should provide the right policy to suit your needs and cover your exposures. Therein lies your dilemma: you can go broke keeping your company secure.

Buying insurance can be a frustrating process for business owners. Finding the right policy for your business can feel like you’re looking for a needle in the haystack. But hay! Giving up and settling for a mediocre policy can do more damage to your business than it can good.

To get you started on buying business insurance, here are the top tips to help you find the right coverage for your business:

  1. Understand Your Risks – If you’re a small or new business, you may not believe you have risks, but you do! Know the risks that are evident in your company, which could include having a property in a flood zone, employing hundreds of employees, maintaining heavy duty equipment which could cause injuries, and regularly having guests on the property. Additionally, if your business uses digital data or operates a vehicle, cyber liability insurance and commercial auto insurance will need to be purchased, respectively.
  2. Catch Up on Coverage – Before you buy a policy, learn about the different types of coverage available. You might need general liability coverage, property insurance, workers’ compensation, and employment practice liability insurance, and you’ll want to understand what coverage is best for you and how it will protect your company.
  3. Know the Limits – Be sure that your insurance policies have limits that are well-within your budget and asset protection. If your deductible is too high to pay out of pocket, lower it; if you can afford to pay more as a one-time expense, raise your deductible to save a few dollars every month.
  4. Don’t Buy Just to Comply with a Contract – Buy insurance to protect your business! It’s not uncommon for business owners to select the first policy that they see online. However, this policy may mean that the limits are too low or that the coverage is insufficient – leaving your company in a less-than-ideal situation after a disaster.
  5. Assess Every Year – As your business grows, so can your risk. You don’t want to be caught underinsured in the event of a claim. Perform an annual insurance review to keep your business protected.

June is National Safety Month! Secure Your Business Insurance

National Safety Month & Business Insurance in Camarillo, CA

Dedicate June, National Safety Month, to updating and maintaining workplace safety and the right business insurance.

Workplace safety cannot exist on best practice guidelines and policies alone. A safe working environment is based on how well the people, in both management and offices, uphold these standards.

During June, National Safety Month, take the initiative to make your workplace a safe zone, minimizing the risk of damage, harm, and lawsuits that your company cause. Then, add another layer of protection by updating your business insurance. To get you started, here are top tips to safeguard your business and employees in the workplace:

  • Prevent slips, trips, and falls – Report and clean up all spills and leaks as they happen, replace worn and ripped flooring, and keep floors clear of wires and clutter.
  • Eliminate fire hazards – Combustible waste should be stored in covered metal receptacles and disposed of daily. In addition, there should be no chairs, tables, or items blocking fire exits at any time.
  • Clear the clutter – A cluttered workplace is a hazard in every sense. Employees and guests can easily sustain an injury when there are objects in their way. Keep aisles, stairways, hallways, and emergency exits clear of clutter and always empty trash cans before they overflow.
  • Provide necessary safety equipment – Depending on the job, equipment like earplugs, earmuffs, hard hats, and safety goggles are required to reduce the risk of workplace injury. If your employees require such protection, ensure that your company provides it.
  • Encourage breaks – So many work-related injuries and illnesses occur because a worker is tired or not alert to his or her surroundings. Taking regular breaks allows your employees to stay fresh on the job!
  • Create written rules – State your safety policies in writing so that all of your employees are aware of what safety protocols to follow.

As a business owner, dedicate the month of June to bettering your business and safety measures. So that you can focus on protecting your business from safety hazards, review your insurance policies to make sure you’re covered. Turn It Up! Here Are Health Benefits of Listening to Music

Health Benefits of Listening to Music

From the brain to the body to the mood – music provides overall benefits.

Have you ever heard about that one study where researchers played music to plants? The famous research concluded that music had an effect on plant growth; that is, they grew better and faster when they are provided with musical stimulation. The same is applicable to humans, oddly enough!

Plants loved to feel the funk and rhythm of the music so much that they actually benefitted from a few tunes now and again. With humans, the music has plenty of benefits, too! Here are just a few of the health benefits of listening to music.

  • Music lifts your mood – Research proves that when you listen to music you like, your brain releases dopamine, a “feel-good” neurotransmitter. Biologically, music causes listeners to feel emotions like happiness, excitement, and joy.
  • Music enhances running performance – Fast or slow, whatever music is motivational to you can make you run faster. In turn, this allows you to get the most out of your workout!
  • Music lowers stress and improves overall health – Listening to music that you enjoy decreases levels of the stress hormone cortisol in your body, which counteracts the effects of the chronic stress. This is an important finding since stress causes 60 percent of all our illnesses and disease.
  • Music helps you sleep better – Listening to relaxing classical music for 45 minutes before turning in means that you can calm down, relax, and get a better night’s sleep.
  • Music eases pain – As the legend Bob Marley once said, “One good thing about music, when it hits you, you feel no pain.” It’s true! Multiple studies found that the therapy of music reduced pain.
  • Music keeps your brain healthy in old age – Listening to or playing music in old age can help keep the brain healthy. Since listening to music is like exercising the brain, one can expect the benefits of better memory and mental sharpness as one ages. Music and a smart noggin? Win-win!

The Basics of General Liability Insurance

Basics of General Liability Insurance in Camarillo, CA

After an accident, you could face a legal battle. Do you have the right insurance?

Despite our best efforts and most calculated and careful actions, accidents happen. We live in a society where an accident can quickly result in a lawsuit against the at-fault person. Fortunately, this is where general liability insurance in Camarillo, CA steps in.

This coverage is protection that a business acquires to safeguard themselves against expenses that come along with being sued. Whether the company was responsible or not for the bodily injury or property damage, the unexpected can happen, and it’s important to be protected.

General liability insurance may be purchased by itself or can be bundled with your business insurance policies. To get started on selecting this type of coverage here’s what you need to know!

Determine the Right Amount of Coverage
Before you choose your general liability insurance limits, you should evaluate the degree of risk that you’re facing. Ask yourself how likely it is that bodily injury, property damage, the need for employment practices insurance, etc. may occur within your business or outside of it. Is there heavy machinery that can result in bodily injury or death? If there is, your chance of being sued has skyrocketed – and you’ll need insurance limits to match your exposure.

The Basics
If your business is involved in an accident and is deemed at fault, the insurer that holds your policy is responsible for paying legal costs. They are legally obligated to pay the liability claims (up to your policy limits) that include personal injury, property damage, bodily injury, and any damage sustained from false advertising.

For those businesses with excessive threats or vulnerabilities to their company, an umbrella policy should be purchased to provide additional protection on top of the general liability that is already in place.

Each employer and business owner should take precautionary measures to ensure that an incident doesn’t happen. Of course, accidents happen, but you can slash your risks with proper planning, caution, and safety policies.

With reliable business insurance, you can focus on growing your company! Contact Chambers & Company Insurance Brokers. Our expert agents know the risks of each business and can take steps to safeguard your company.

How Business Insurance in Camarillo, CA Can Protect Your Bottom Line

Business Insurance in Camarillo CAThreats to business security is on the rise, so be sure to secure your business insurance in Camarillo, CA.

The director of the FBI, Robert Mueller, has stated that cyber attacks are quickly becoming the nation’s number one threat. With this information in hand (our source is the head of the FBI, after all!), businesses should be implementing strict and severe strategies for their cyber security to stay, well, secure!

Protecting your company’s data is imperative! In order to begin development of a cyber security plan, you must understand the Internet threats and how protecting your business from those threats directly affects your bottom-line. Check out the top five threats (and how to prevent them!):

  1. Malicious Code: Disastrous to each company who has an online presence and code generators.
Prevent: Install and use anti-virus programs, anti-spyware programs, and firewalls on all computers.
  2. Stolen Laptops/Devices: Each company computer stores a plethora of sensitive information.
Prevent: Always protect your customers’ data when transporting it anywhere on a portable device by encrypting all data that resides in it.
  3. Phishing: Spam and phishing emails can download bugs onto devices as well as allowing hackers to directly enter all files.
Prevent: Instruct all employees to contact their manager on every suspicious-looking email. Train them to spot these emails before ever opening them.
  4. Unsecured Wireless Internet Networks: ‘Free’ Wi-Fi is secured by the lowest form of encryption, allowing people to access your files and passwords.
Prevent: When setting up a wireless network, make sure the default password is changed and encrypt your wireless network. In addition, never use the ‘free’ Wi-Fi around coffee shops and malls.
  5. Disgruntled Employee Threat: A bitter, former employee could lash out at your company by releasing sensitive information, as well as changing passwords, and deleting critical information.
Prevent: Divide critical functions and responsibilities among employees within the organization, limiting the likelihood of one employee shutting down the whole company. Each time a member of staff leaves, on good or bad terms, change all passwords and passcodes.

INGREDIENTS

Soba

  • 6 ounces soba noodles
  • 2 cups frozen organic edamame
  • 10 ounces (about 3 cups) sugar snap peas or snow peas
  • 6 medium-sized carrots, peeled
  • ½ cup chopped fresh cilantro (about 2 handfuls)
  • ¼ cup sesame seeds

Ginger-sesame sauce

  • ¼ cup reduced-sodium tamari or soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons quality peanut oil or extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 small lime, juiced
  • 1 tablespoon toasted sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon honey or agave nectar
  • 1 tablespoon white miso*
  • 2 teaspoons freshly grated ginger
  • 1 teaspoon chili garlic sauce or sriracha

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. To prepare the vegetables: Roughly chop the peas and slice the carrots into long, thin strips with a julienne peeler.
  2. To make the sauce: whisk together the ingredients in a small bowl until emulsified. Set aside.
  3. Bring two big pots of water to a boil. In the meantime, toast the sesame seeds: Pour the sesame seeds into a small pan. Toast for about 4 to 5 minutes over medium-low heat, shaking the pan frequently to prevent burning, until the seeds are turning golden and starting to make popping noises.
  4. Once the pots of water are boiling: In one pot, cook the soba noodles just until al dente, according to package directions (probably about 5 minutes), then drain and briefly rinse under cool water. Cook the frozen edamame in the other pot until warmed through (about 4 to 6 minutes) but before draining, toss the halved peas into the boiling edamame water and cook for an additional 20 seconds. Drain.
  5. Combine the soba noodles, edamame, snap peas and carrots in a large serving bowl. Pour in the dressing and toss with salad servers. Toss in the chopped cilantro and toasted sesame seeds. Serve.
